Indoor positioning systems for mobile robots are essential for ensuring precise navigation and orientation in enclosed spaces. They enable robots to determine their position in real-time and efficiently plan complex routes. This helps optimize workflows and reliably avoids obstacles, enhancing both safety and efficiency. These systems are particularly important for automated processes, as they ensure the accurate execution of tasks such as material transport or sample handling. Moreover, indoor positioning systems form the basis for seamlessly integration mobile robots into smart environments like smart labs or factories.
The Center for Life Science Automation at the University of Rostock has been dedicated to the use of mobile robotics in life science laboratories. In our article "Indoor Positioning Systems of Mobile Robotics: A Review" we present various indoor positioning methods and discuss their applicability, advantages and disadvantages.
